QBs
Name
Team
Comments-Make sure to get one in the top 5, and a backup no worse than 17
Value
1
Tom Brady
NE
All of the killer offense is back, add Fred Taylor, could be a 50+ TD season again…
1st
2
Peyton Manning
IND
Never discount Peyton…there seems to be some offensive wrinkles in the works too
1st
3
Drew Brees
NO
Best statistical QB in 2008. Still a top tier and fringe first round possibility
2nd
4
Donovon McNabb
PHI
Could be a little low with the new offensive weapons
2nd
5
Phillip Rivers
SD
Statistically very good, but still has no stellar receiving options
2nd
6
Aaron Rogers
GB
Surprisingly good last year, but both Driver and Jennings just got paid.
3rd
7
Carson Palmer
CIN
This may seem like a stretch but, OchoCinco is rejuvenated and Coles is on the other side.
3rd
8
Matt Ryan
ATL
C'mon, seriously, Ryan is EFFICIENT…period.
3rd
9
Tony Romo
DAL
Generally reached on, and with no T.O. I am skeptical of his production
5th
10
Kurt Warner
ARI
Almost 5,000 yds and a 2 to 1 TD to INT ratio. Hold out on him high unless Boldin resigns.
5th
11
Jay Cutler
CHI
Current starters at WR, Rashied Davis and Devon Hester…neither over 5'11..not exactly DENs WRs
5th
12
Ben Roethlisberger
PIT
This one hurts me, but he is a two time Super Bowl Champion. 17 tds to 15 ints? On 3300 yds
5th
13
Matt Cassell
KC
Great job in NE, but NE is not KC. If Cassell has a good year, Bowe will have a monster year by comparison
6th
14
Brett Favre
MIN
If he signs, and I believe he will. He could be a huge steal as a fantasy backup.
6th
15
Eli Manning
NYG
Considering no Burress…he still had 21 tds to 10 ints. No Burress changes those numbers significantly
6th
16
Matt Hasselback
SEA
The addition of TJ Houshmandzadeh will improve his numbers
6th
17
Trent Edwards
BUF
DO NOT DISREGARD THE T.O. EFFECT. T.O. Even if its only one season, Edwards will look like a real NFL QB
6th
18
Jake Delhomme
CAR
The most overrated starting NFL QB in a long time.
8th
19
Marc Bulger
STL
Not that long ago, Bulger was a top 5-8 QB, as a backup it could be a legit risk. Remember though, no Holt, no Bruce
8th
20
Brady Quinn
CLE
All indications are that he will win the job…he will be a Manager of the Game…Do not expect major numbers
9th
21
Chad Pennington
MIA
Chad's starting position is his for now…but they love Pat White. Be very causious about the value where you pick him
10th
22
Kyle Orton
DEN
The only way you should pick Orton is if you buy everything that Josh McDaniels is selling
10th
23
Jason Campbell
WAS
Will this guy ever live up to potential? He is the starter and that's the only reason he's on this list
10th
24
Joe Flacco
BAL
Again, Flacco is the starter. But he puts up podestrian numbers (3,000 yds, 14tds, 12 ints)
11th
25
Kerry Collins
TEN
Again, just a starter. Vince Young should scare Collins owners, especially with the loss of Steve McNair (young's mentor)
11th
26
Jeff Garcia
OAK
Only if he steals the job from Russell (I wouldn't touch him until that happens sometime during the regular season)
FA
27
Shaun Hill
SF
Will be the starter for SF, but what does that really mean fantasy wise. Hill owner better believe in Crabtree
FA
28
David Garrard
JAX
The starter but so what? Roethlisberger/Delhomme numbers
FA
29
Mark Sanchez
NYJ
Should be the starter and would not be a bad value pick. His mobility will allow him to make some plays.
FA
30
Daunte Cullpepper
DET
Should start until Stafford takes over, buyer be ware
FA
31
Derek Anderson
CLE
Should not start, but if Quinn chokes, Anderson would go in pretty quickly
FA
32
Vince Young
TEN
This would be a pure upside pick and only if you believe he will make an aggressive comeback.
FA
RBs
Name
Team
Comments-Many guys are way overrated, which means great value on guys who will fall
Value
1
Adrian Peterson
MIN
1st overall pick until further notice…shades of LT for over 5 years
1st pick
2
Michael Turner
ATL
Model of consistancy. Actually had a better season than AP…but evaluate everything, AP is a better pick
2nd pick
3
LaDainian Tomlinson
SD
1500 yds 12 tds from scrimmage was a discraceful season for LT
top 5
4
Steven Jackson
STL
Generally a top 3 pick before AP and Turner came along, the team is recommited to being a smashmouth rushing team
top 10
5
Brian Westbrook
PHI
Better offensive weapons, better o-line, and a solid backup RB…Westbrooks touches should have more punch
top 10
6
Matt Forte
CHI
Another consistancy guy and he catches the ball well, Cutler will check down to him frequently
1st
7
DeAngelo Williams
CAR
Don't buy the one year hype. He's good, but not top 5 good like some think, he will go early to allow better guys to drop
2nd
8
Maurice Jones-Drew
JAX
Do you really want to put all your eggs in the 5'9 feature back basket?
2nd
9
Clinton Portis
WAS
Skins sucked, but you cannot deny 1700 yds an 9 tds from scrimmage…all the while bitching about his line
2nd
10
Thomas Jones
NYJ
Check his numbers, now that the team should have better coaching his numbers should be consistant
2nd
11
Frank Gore
SF
He has greatness in him, but who knows which Gore you're going to get
3rd
12
Marion Barber
DAL
Great running back, but with Felix Jones coming back and no T.O., who knows what his stats will look like
4th
13
Steve Slaton
HOU
Great rookie season, lets see how the sophomore season pans out…I think it’s a slight risk, use your discretion
4th
14
Brandon Jacobs
NYG
RedZone killer. 15 tds, enough said. Beware though, he just got paid.
4th
15
Chris Johnson
TEN
Great little player. Very explosive, the LenDale White situation worries me. Value is the word
4th
16
Marshawn Lynch
BUF
Granted, he is out for the first quarter of the season…T.O. will loosen the box for Lynch when he plays
5th
17
Knowshon Moreno
DEN
That's right a rookie…I have a hunch, in the McDaniels scheme, Moreno will be a beast from day one.
5th
18
Willie Parker
PIT
If he stays healthy, Parker is potentially a top 10 rb. Remember, until wk 14 in '07, he lead the NFL in rushing
6th
19
Larry Johnson
KC
Could be a great sleeper if he gets his head out of his ass under new regime
7th
20
Willis McGahee
BAL
Not clearly a featured back in BAL, but the closest thing to it from what's left
7th
21
Jonathan Stewart
CAR
Good redzone numbers. Can CAR really rack up 100,000 yds an 200 tds between 2 guys again?
7th
22
LenDale White
TEN
Claims to be recommitted. I will reserve judgement on his attitude and weight until at least week 4
7th
23
Jamal Lewis
CLE
Could be rejuvenated with new coaching staff, on a bad year he still got 1000 yds 4 tds, better redzone #s
7th
24
Ronnie Brown
MIA
It may be the Wildcat (so be leery) but he still put up 1100 yds and 10 tds in limited action
7th
25
Fred Taylor
NE
Who knows? Maybe a Corey Dillon first year with NE type of season for Taylor, he will do more than Maroney
8th
26
Ryan Grant
GB
Another guy I don't trust. If he's good he's very good, if he's not he's on your bench taking up a roster spot
8th
27
Joseph Addai
IND
There will be pressure to perform with the rookie on his heels..it'll either be great or horrific
9th
28
Kevin Smith
DET
He is the starter and should improve on last season's numbers
9th
29
Reggie Bush
NO
DO NOT REACH ON BUSH!!! He cannot run between the tackles
9th
30
Cedric Benson
CIN
He is the starter for whatever that's worth in CIN
9th
31
Felix Jones
DAL
Could be very productive…in bye weeks when you need to sub out your starters
10th
32
Darren McFadden
OAK
Another sexy college back who cannot successfully run between the tackles in the NFL
10th
33
Pierre Thomas
NO
I don't buy it. He and Bush should split carries 50/50. Bush has more explosiveness, better quality touches
10th
34
Edgerrin James
Depends on where he ends up, use caution
FA
35
Carnell Williams
TB
Only if you have huge ONIONS. Great talent, terrible injury history
FA
36
Chris Wells
ARI
Great talent. Could be the best Buckeye since E.George. But he couldn't stay healthy in college…?
FA
37
Derrick Ward
NYG
Not with Jacobs getting the bulk of the redzone touches, I don't care if the guy gets 2,000 yds rushing
FA
38
Julius Jones
SEA
A joke of a Fantasy player
FA
39
T.J. Duckett
SEA
Only a redzone threat. Think…10 tds on 50 yds rushing…on the entire season.
FA
40
Tim Hightower
ARI
Ten TDs last season. Great, but only if they bring Wells along slowly
FA
WRs
Comments-The deepest position this year. Potentially 1000yds clear into the mid 20s
1
Larry Fitzgerald
ARI
Most talented WR in the League. 3 of his 5 seasons he went over 1400yds and avg's 9 tds a season. Safest WR
1st
2
Andre Johnson
HOU
Lead the leauge in receiving and does it quietly. Not the sexiest pick by can be one of the smartest
1st
3
Randy Moss
NE
There are 4 guys you don't sleep on and #1 is MOSS. Brady will be good = happy Moss is an effective Moss
1st
4
Steve Smith
CAR
I don't know how he does it, but little Steve Smith is a beast. Easily a first rd talent and no worse than 2nd rd
1st
5
Terrell Owens
BUF
Another don't sleep. No one in history has a better first year with a new team track record.
2nd
6
Reggie Wayne
IND
Its still Indy and that means Peyton will throw it more than hand it off. No Harrison, Wayne will have numbers
2nd
7
Calvin Johnson
DET
Quietly got 1300yds and 12tds on the history's worst team ever.
2nd
8
Brandon Marshall
DEN
Are you kidding? Some boards have him in the 20s. The kid can do it and I don't care who's throwing the ball.
3rd
9
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
SEA
2 years ago 1200 yds and 12tds as a #2 in terrible CIN, Hasselback finally has a #1 to throw to.
3rd
10
Chad OchoCinco
CIN
Don’t Sleep. He claims to be motivated with the Bengals. You may think it’s a reach, I think he could be huge.
4th
11
Braylon Edwards
CLE
Braylon can do it. (1300yds 16tds in 07) never discount a guy too much if he's done it before.
4th
12
Roddy White
ATL
I am only putting him this high because I have a hunch. I would take him since he's done two years in a row.
4th
13
Dwayne Bowe
KC
I like this kid, bet you he did better than you think, and that's with Tyler Thigpen at QB. 1022yds/7tds…
5th
14
Marques Colston
NO
Again..did it before, Revert back to Brees' numbers. Missed 6 gms and non factor is 3 others. 760/5 in 7 games
5th
15
Anquan Boldin
ARI
If he would let us know who he's going to play for, I could put him higher.
5th
16
Greg Jennings
GB
Remember, just got paid (red flag). Besides its still just GB.
6th
17
Hines Ward
PIT
Ward is solid. Until Holmes officially becomes Ben's go to guy…Ward is still very relevant
7th
18
Lee Evans
BUF
Great #3. T.O. will get a lot of attention. I expect Evans to get a lot of surprise catches and TDs
7th
19
Eddie Royal
DEN
In McDaniels offense he will thrive. Especially if Marshall is not on the team.
7th
20
Torry Holt
JAX
Don’t Sleep again and finally. New environment, still a very good receiver. No worse than 1200/7
7th
21
Laverneous Coles
CIN
The number 2 in CIN, I like it. Again, value, value, value
8th
22
Wes Welker
NE
Don’t overrate this guy. He's still just a slot possession guy. Most leagues don’t give a ton of points for catches
8th
23
Roy Williams
DAL
He is now the go to guy in DAL…will he fold like the rest of that team? I think he will
9th
24
Santonio Holmes
PIT
Coming of SB MVP, this could be the year he puts it all together
9th
25
DeSean Jackson
PHI
Lots of new faces on that O. He will be a familiar one for McNabb and they will build on that
9th
26
Jerricho Cotchery
NYJ
Hey he's the #1 on the Jets. At some point you say stats be damned and pick #1 WRs
9th
27
Vincent Jackson
SD
See the above
10th
28
Antonio Bryant
TB
Ditto
10th
29
Anthony Gonzalez
IND
Can Gonzalez fill Harrison's shoes? To be honest I hope you have all of your starting WRs by now.
10th
30
Donnie Avery
STL
I don't like it but I have to put him in the top 32
10th
31
Santana Moss
WAS
Has had good fantasy seasons before, but it is a crapshoot trying to figure out if this will be one of them
10th
32
Donald Driver
GB
If you believe Rogers will have a good year like 2008, he may be a safe late round pick
10th
33
Deion Branch
SEA
TJ on the team puts him back against #2 CBs where he belongs. Keep in mind, he's only gone for 1,000yds once
10th
34
Ted Ginn Jr
MIA
I like him in that wildcat formation, but he really should be a 4th WR and a bench player for most of the season
10th
35
Devin Hester
CHI
Not even Jay Cutler can make this guy into a legit WR. He'll get the ball but don’t bank on much
11th
36
Michael Crabtree
SF
Could be a serious fantasy rookie. He's no Randy Moss as a rookie, but look where we are on this list
11th
37
Bernard Berrian
MIN
Hate him fantasy wise, but if Favre is in MIN, Berrian's number will go up at least 30%
FA
38
Chris Henry
CIN
If CIN gets back to airing it out, Henry will play, but with OchoCinco and Coles ahead of him
FA
39
Percy Harvin
MIN
Another guy that could be decent with the arrival of Brett Favre
FA
40
Plaxico Burress
FA
I don't see him playing. Just keep your eyes on him if he's A) cleared to play B)gets on a team with a decent QB
FA
TEs
Comments-MUST get a starter in the top 5, if you don't have one by 14, give up.
1
Tony Gonzalez
ATL
With the move to ATL, Gonzalez's numbers could even go up
2nd
2
Antonio Gates
SD
Barring injury, there has not been a situation that dictates that a Gates owner would be dissatisfied…at all
2nd
3
Jason Witten
DAL
Steady. He isn't the big time threat the previous two are, but he gradually puts up stats.
2nd
4
Dallas Clark
IND
Without Harrison in the fold, I look for Clark to have an improved season.
3rd
5
Kellen Winslow
TB
In CLE, Winslow never got the ball enough. If TB is smart they will make Winslow the #2 reciever.
3rd
6
Owen Daniels
HOU
The quiet assassin. Most fantasy owner undervalue this guy heavily.
5th
7
Greg Olsen
CHI
We're still waiting for the breakout MIAMI U TE season from Olsen, lack of WRs in CHI
5th
8
Chris Cooley
WAS
WAS is still in flux and has no idea what their identity is, but Cooley is a great weapon
5th
9
Heath Miller
PIT
The poor man's Jason Witten. If you don't have a starting TE now, pull the trigger on Miller.
6th
10
Brandon Pettigrew
DET
Yes that's right, a rookie in the top 10.
7th
11
Todd Heap
BAL
Elevates a bit with WR Mason in retirement
7th
12
Jeremy Shockey
NO
Shockey has scourned most fantasy players. Brees' numbers and Shockey's potential have to merge
8th
13
Dustin Keller
NYJ
Great playmaking ability. His rookie season had a lot of bumps in the road
8th
14
Zach Miller
OAK
Most "experts" have Zach Miller as the best non top tier TE, I might agree…I just like 13 guys more.
8th
15
Visanthe Shiancoe
MIN
With Favre in toe, Shiancoe (or any MIN reciever for that matter) should have a better season
8th
16
Vernon Davis
SF
Davis grew up a lot last year and is now one of Coach Singletary's favorite guys.
8th
17
Anthony Fasano
MIA
The Wildcat means tons of options. Fasano is one of them, he's just like #5 or #6
9th
18
Tony Scheffler
DEN
This is a travesty. Scheffler should be top 10, but NE coaches do not use TE's as offensive threats…
9th
19
Bo Scaife
TEN
Steady but a backup in my world
10th
20
Donald Lee
GB
Has moments but has yet to string a few games in a row. He dissappears for weeks at a time
10th
21
L.J. Smith
BAL
This guy has talent as proven in PHI. He should have stayed there. In BAL he is not even a starter
10th
22
Alge Crumpler
TEN
Seriously, if you don't have a TE by now punt the position for a while.
10th
23
Kevin Boss
NYG
Boss was great during the Giants' SuperBowl push, but he is still just another multi-purpose TE
10th
24
Marcedes Lewis
JAX
Another young guy with great potential that has not been realized.
11th
25
Martellus Bennett
DAL
A flashy TE specifically suited for DAL, like most Cowboys (Romo, R.Williams, etc) tends to choke
11th
26
John Carlson
SEA
Young guy that SEA believes in implicetly
11th
27
Daniel Graham
DEN
You really don't want to pick backups, period. Especially if the starter isn't rated very high
FA
28
Alex Smith
NE
Again, its NE. They could have Winslow Sr or Newsome and the guy wouldn't average much.
FA
29
Brent Celek
PHI
You have to be kidding if you haven't pick a TE by now
FA
30
Jerramy Stevens
TB
You have to be kidding if you haven't pick a TE by now
FA
31
Chase Coffman
CIN
You have to be kidding if you haven't pick a TE by now
FA
32
Billy Miller
NO
You have to be kidding if you haven't pick a TE by now
FA
DEFs
Comments-After #10, the DEF's don't even matter…6 of one, half dozen of another
1
PIT
Best DEF bar none regardless of the stats
5th
2
BAL
Interesting moves, but still a great DEF, even without their Ryan as their coordinator
6th
3
NYG
Giants will have to depend on their D to save them in many games
6th
4
MIN
They still are the best against the run, which should lead to turnovers
6th
5
PHI
Steady and effective, won't lose you any games
7th
6
CHI
When healthy, they are a top 3 DEF. No Mike Brown to worry about this year
7th
7
NE
It is still NE, their secondary is improved and they still have a top tier front 7, even if they are old
7th
8
SD
With Merriman back, everything changes. SD could be the steal of your draft
7th
9
DAL
DAL will get turnovers, but they will also give up yards and points
8th
10
NYJ
Sleeper alert!!! Coach Ryan is the best defensive mind in the NFL, he will make Gholston the next Terrell Suggs
8th
11
TEN
IMPORTANT: TEN has like a 0.300 winning percentage when Albert Haynesworth doesn't play.
9th
12
MIA
I don't know how they do it, there is no defensive wildcat, but they get results
9th
13
CAR
This team is built on their defense, we'll see how it pans out.
9th
14
TB
See comments about CAR
9th
15
GB
Better have a DEF by now. GB will have growing pains transitioning into the 3-4
10th
16
IND
Its Indy. The OFF wins games, but they do get sacks and turnovers
10th
17
ARI
ARI played great in the playoffs, can they sustain it?
11th
18
CLE
They have a unit that is balanced, that’s been the problem. If ManGENIUS can let them loose it'll be different
11th
19
DEN
DEN has the personel to make a quick transition to the 3-4, I just don't trust McDaniels. I do trust Nolan, though
11th
20
JAX
Great front 7 talent, injuries have been a problem
12th
Ks
Comments-C'mon, really…they're just kickers. Just make sure you get one by 20th
1
Stephen Gostkowski
NE
Best offense will produce enough extra points to merit the pick
2
David Akers
PHI
With the added offensive players, PHI should get to the red zone more frequently
3
Ryan Longwell
MIN
Favre means more deep balls plus the running game. More points is still more points
4
Jason Elam
ATL
Tony Gonzalez adds to the potential for Elam scoring
5
Robbie Gould
CHI
CHI will be improved, keep in mind, Cutler is the most inefficient top tier QB in the red zone
6
Adam Vinatieri
IND
He is still Vinatieri, the most clutch kicker ever
7
Neil Rackers
ARI
Still expect the Cards to put up numbers week in and week out
8
Nate Kaeding
SD
SD had a bad year by comparison, that includes Kaeding
9
Jeff Reed
PIT
They won't average 35 pts a game, but Reed will get his fair share FG attempts
10
Mason Crosby
GB
GB unlogically puts up points in some regard, not all from Aaron Rogers
11
Nick Folk
DAL
Its DAL, lots of points…not as many wins
12
Rob Bironas
TEN
TEN scores just enough to win games…that means lots of FGs
13
John Kasay
CAR
Steve Smith from day one and the most potent "rushing tandem"
14
Jason Hanson
DET
DET HAS TO BE BETTER
15
Shayne Graham
CIN
CIN is looking to get back to the "air it out" Bengals, we'll see
16
Phil Dawson
CLE
Beware, rumors that Phil may not be the starter at PK by the start of the season
17
Kris Brown
HOU
HOU should keep ascending upward, so should Brown's production
18
Matt Bryant
TB
They should score FGs if nothing else. Note: Winslow (TE) is the only Buc that I rank high
19
Rian Lindell
BUF
T.O. is balls out the first season with a new team. Should be worth the PATs
20
Josh Brown
STL
Can the Rams get back on track offensively? In the mean time, Brown should get attempts
21
Joe Nedney
SF
Seriously, I shouldn't even be typing…if you don't have a kicker by now… … … PUNT!!!!
22
Sebastian Janikowski
OAK
Just pick one, swap 'em out on the waiver wire if it makes you feel better
23

Fantasy Hoops Position-by-Position "Ultimate Stat" for 2009-10

NOTE: Last week, we presented our Top 50 overall for our Ultimate Quantitative Baseline (UQB) statistic for fantasy hoops in 2009-10. The UQB system is explained in more detail here. Suffice to say that players are measured proportionately against each other in key categories based on the standard deviation from the mean in each area. It is truly the Ultimate Quantitative Baseline of how each player performed in 2008-09.

Fantasy Football: Areas of Separation Last Year With Notable Players

We posted our rundown a few weeks ago of the top fantasy football players for 2009 on our UQB system. [Here is the explanation from that feature verbatim: The UQB system is explained in more detail here. Suffice to say that players are measured proportionately against each other in key categories based on the standard deviation from the mean in each area. It is truly the Ultimate Quantitative Baseline of how each player performed in 2008. Kickers are not included among the top overall players because although they account for a great deal of scoring, they do not get drafted in the top few rounds overall.]

As far as how the players differentiated themselves on the UQB, here are some of the individual numbers that players posted that were among the most noteworthy in terms of separation in a statistical category:

^ Drew Brees (5069 passing yards)
^ Jay Cutler (4526 passing yards)
^ Adrian Peterson (1760 rushing yards)
^ Michael Turner (1699 rushing yards)
^ Mo Jones-Drew (565 receiving yards)
^ Andre Johnson (1575 receiving yards, 115 catches)
^ Wes Welker (111 catches)
^ Brandon Marshall (104 catches)
^ Devery Henderson (24.8 yards per catch)
^ Robert Meachem (24.1 yards per catch)
^ Tony Gonzalez (1058 receiving yards, 10 touchdowns, 96 catches)
